About Helsie

I’m a 25 year old Cornish girl, residing in South East London, after a stint in Northern Ireland. I can typically be found in my bed with my laptop, on my couch with my laptop, in the kitchen or down the local bowling centre.

I’m a keen ten-pin bowler and have been fortunate enough to have had the experience of playing in international competition. I’m extremely grateful for this; bowling has taken me to Malta, Ireland, Wales, Germany, Jersey and Russia and I’m hoping that one day I may be able to save enough to take a trip and have a go at a tournament stateside. Highlight of my bowling career has to be playing in the 2007 World Cup in St Petersburg, where I finished in 26th place, missing the cut to the next round by only 10 pins. I have also medalled in Triple Crown events, won various events in both Northern and The Republic of Ireland and finished 3rd in the u24 Malta Youth Open 2005. My high game is 299 x 4 and my high series for three games is 773 – you do the maths. I am currently the captain of the London Ladies team.

These days, you are also fairly likely to see me running plodding along the streets of London. An utter moment of madness saw me enter the Brighton Marathon in 2011, running for Mind, in memory of the mother of a good friend. Although I missed my target time, largely due to the unseasonably hot weather, I completed it in 5 hours and 9 minutes and I am already planning on doing another.

Another big love of mine is cooking. And food. I love to cook, I love to read recipes, I love to experiment, I love going to food markets and I love eating out. Although I am a meat eater, at the moment my cooking seems to be steering more in the vegetarian direction with a Mediterranean influence. My current speciality is spinach and ricotta lasagna and I also do an awesome chocolate truffle cake.

Fashion wise? I’m all about short dresses, leggings and boots. I also have a high heel fetish, adore flowers and think that hats and fascinators are the best thing ever. I also seem to have an obscene number of scarves.

So there you go, a small insight into the mind of Hels. This is my personal blog, documenting my annoyances at the world, my running adventures and anything else that may take my interest. My food blog and my business blog will be launched shortly as separate websites.

About the website

Well, not much to say here. I used to be a decent web designer back in the day, when it was all about iframes and sparkly gifs. Or perhaps, we were just all really bad? Anyhow, we are now in the days of CSS and CMS and all these other modern things I haven’t kept up with, so taking the lazy way out, I have chosen to power my blog with WordPress (because I can install it) and use a free theme because I can’t make my own.  I chose ‘Tarski’ because I was able to add my own header easily enough and I vaguely understand the CSS enough to edit it to my choice of colours. Perhaps one day I’ll sit down properly and figure out how to build my own theme.

Until then, enjoy.
