Couldn’t get to a PC yesterday and about to go out now. Am still resting shin – very painful. Managed about 20 minutes additional walking on each day though so am still hanging in there. Just.

Shins felt ok, so I decided to hit the treadmill for 25 minutes at lunchtime. Following some stretching and 5 minutes cycling to warm up, I did a 5 minute powerwalk before doing some speedwork – 400m running fast then a 200m powerwalk/jog to recover for 15 minutes. Then, to cool down I turned the speed right down and put the incline on 5% to walk for 5 minutes up a hill.
I actually enjoyed it, however it was definately a good thing that I stopped the running when I did as my shin kicked in and now it is much worse than before. I should have listened to everyone else and given it more than a day to recover – I think it needs a few days rest at least. May see my osteopath if it doesn’t clear up after rest.
I was meant to be doing one of the 5k Park Runs tomorrow – needless to say that I am absolutely not doing it now. I’m meant to be running around Blackheath with a friend on Sunday – but I have told her that it may simply have to be a walk as I’m not about to risk making this worse. On the plus side, the insoles from the nice people at Asics have definately fixed my blister problem.
Not sure what tomorrow will bring – but certainly not running! Maybe just some fun and games on the Wii Fit at my boyfriend’s house
First of all – thanks Pete for the encouragement!
Still hanging in there at the moment. Wasn’t about to risk any further damage today, so I thought I’d make it up by adding in some extra walking. I usually get the DLR from Lewisham to Poplar then change to get to Blackwall for work. Today, I got off at Canary Wharf and walked the rest of the way. Took me about twenty minutes, so today’s effort was a 20 minute walk.
I feel like I’m being really lazy compared to everyone elses efforts – but I am really in a fair bit of pain at the moment.
I was pondering going for a swim before work tomorrow, but 1) I don’t like swimming much and 2) I’m actually not sure I’d make it to work in time, so seems a bit pointless. I thought I may give the cross-trainer in the gym a go instead. We’ll see how it all feels tomorrow – I never thought I’d actually want to go running and miss not doing it!
Day 2 of Juneathon. What a mistake. Decided to hit the treadmill in the gym after work today as I signed up to do a 5k run next month with a friend. Anyway, after some stretching and a bit of power-walking to warm up, I set the timer for 25 minutes – the intention to just gently run a very easy 25 minutes, with the incline setting on ’1.’
What a mistake. I managed to do 12 minutes running before my shin started to really hurt. Limped on for another few minutes after turning the speed and incline down and then after feeling the tears well up, slowed down to walk to 25 and limped off. I was very grateful to get a seat on the DLR, as I don’t think I could have stood the whole way back. Limped the 10 minute walk home and I am now stretched out with ice on my shin. I had no idea that shin splints was this painful.
My boyfriend pointed out that while he understood why I attempted to run, he thought it was pretty stupid to carry on after it started hurting. I have to say that I agree.
So, there won’t be any running for me tomorrow. Today was a pretty slow 3.5km. Tomorrow – who knows?

So, today was the first day of the Juneathon. Why I thought it was 26.2 miles over the month of June I don’t know; it’s essentially exercising every day.
Now, I was honestly planning on running today. Right up until about 4 hours ago. Yesterday, I ran the Bupa London 10k. This is the furthest distance I have ever run to date and as reported yesterday, my shin splints really kicked in before the halfway point, reducing me to tears. Anyway, at work today I was recapping the events to a colleague (who is a pretty damn seasoned runner himself) and mentioned I was planning on going for a slow and easy 1-2 mile jog, just to work out some of the stiffness in my legs. And also because I appear to have got addicted and had itchy feet screaming “run, run!” He told me that if the shin splints had reduced me to tears and if they hurt just to touch that this was a very stupid idea and I would make it worse. He advised against doing any type of exercise for a couple of days. So, I decided to take the advice as my shin is still very tender and I don’t want to knock myself out for longer.
However, this would have meant failing Juneathon at the very first hurdle. So, I decided to get off the DLR a stop early and have a longer walk home. It usually takes me 10 minutes to walk home from the station on the way home from work. Getting off a stop early made it a 25 minute walk. I am assuming that my usual daily walking doesn’t count, otherwise I’d have done 35 minutes walking today.
So, Juneathon day 1? 15 minutes walking and 50 stomach crunchies. They were not fun.
Tomorrow, I plan to go to the gym. If my shins still hurt, I’ll limit myself to the bike, but I’m planning an easy 30 minute work-out to try and work out the stiffness. Then hopefully back on the wagon after that!
